A Favourite Portrait Story
The Widow and the painting A CERTAIN poor widow had one solitary portrait of her husband. At spring cleaning time, wishing to take his painting and to avoid expense, she used wood from some old frames for herself, but used the wood so unskillfully that with the frame she ripped the painting. Suddenly she imagined her husband writhing with pain, said, “Why do you hurt me so, Mistress? What use can my blood add to the wood for your crooked frame? If you want me gone, there is the blacksmith who has a red hot fire, who will burn me in an instant; but if you want my painting and straight wood frame, there is the artist, who will create and frame my portrait and not hurt me.”… The least outlay is not always the greatest gain.
